Economic situation

The Netherlands is known as an open, inventive and inclusive country, where freedom, high trust and good business sense have flourished for centuries. While being among the world’s five most competitive economies, the Netherlands also ranks as the second most innovative country in the world.

Despite being slightly smaller than Denmark, the Netherlands is densely populated with 17.2 million inhabitants.

Trade relations between Denmark and the Netherlands

The trade relations between Denmark and the Netherlands are based on close ties. This is a result of a common approach to business, and the countries being like-minded. Denmark and Danish businesses have a positive reputation in the Netherlands, and the Dutch are known for being skilled and reliable when doing business.

In 2019, Denmark exported goods and services to the Netherlands worth DKK 52.7 billion DKK, making the Netherlands the sixth largest export market for Denmark. 

Political situation

The centre-right politician Mark Rutte (VVD) has been Prime Minister of the Netherlands since 2010. The current government coalition consists of the centre-right parties VVD, D66, CDA and CU. The Dutch government aims to increase investment in the citizens’ security and welfare, and have recently set a very ambitious climate goal of a 49 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.

Internationally, the Netherlands has a long history of advocating international legal order. Like Denmark, the Netherlands is a member of the EU, NATO and the UN.
